Big Walk supports online groups of 2 to 12 players. Two is the minimum for the intended cooperative experience and 12 is the maximum party size; the separate 2-player, 3-player, and 4+ world options change how challenges are configured, not how many people may join the session.

What Is the Big Walk Player Limit?

The official range is 2–12 players. Big Walk is designed around teamwork and communication, so a one-player session is not a supported way to complete the adventure. At the other end of the range, no more than 12 players can share a session.

Players on different supported systems can join the same group through crossplay. See the Big Walk Crossplay Guide for platform and version requirements.

Does the Players Setting Limit the Lobby?

No. When the host starts a world, they choose a 2-player, 3-player, or 4+ player version. This setting adjusts challenge configurations to the expected minimum group size; it does not cap how many people can enter that world.

For example, choosing the 2-player version does not prevent a third or fourth friend from joining later, as long as the session remains within the overall 12-player maximum.

Which World Version Should You Choose?

  • Choose 2-player if your group may often shrink to two people.
  • Choose 3-player if three players will reliably return for progression sessions.
  • Choose 4+ player only when at least four people are expected to remain available for challenge configurations.

The host chooses this when starting the session. If some friends will join only briefly or miss later sessions, the official FAQ recommends choosing a lower number.

What Is the Best Group Size?

There is no single officially recommended group size inside the 2–12 range. House House describes fewer players as a more focused co-op experience, while groups closer to 12 become more chaotic.

Choose based on the experience your group wants. Two to four players make it easier to track callouts and keep everyone involved in one task. Larger groups can spread across the island and socialize, but benefit from agreed roles, landmark names, and a clear plan for regrouping. The coordination advice is practical guidance rather than a gameplay requirement.

Can Players Join and Leave Later?

The world configuration should account for the smallest group that will continue playing. Additional friends can join without changing that setting, and the host remains the keeper of the save.

When returning for another session, the same host must start that saved world again. Anyone joining should also meet the version compatibility rules explained in the Crossplay Guide.

If Your Group Has Only One Player

You can open a world and explore briefly, but the official FAQ says there is no single-player mode and solo progress will stop. Use the Big Walk Solo Guide before planning a one-person playthrough.
